C. Robin (Graham) Schmidt

Robin is an associate in the Charleston office where she practices primarily in the area of construction litigation, including the representation of design professionals, contractors and subcontractors. After graduating from Washington and Lee University with a Bachelor of Arts in economics and history, Robin worked in Washington, DC, as a litigation consultant.
At the Charleston School of Law, Robin served as Associate Managing Editor of the Charleston Law Review and as a member of the Honor Council. Prior to joining Carlock Copeland & Stair, Robin clerked for the Honorable Carmen T. Mullen of the 14th Judicial Circuit.

Kent Stair, Bill Jones and the Design Professional Group presented How to Avoid, Manage and Resolve Claims Against Design Professionals and led a discussion regarding claims against design professionals which included advice on the best practices to avoid claims, how to handle claims when they cannot be avoided, and the various ways to resolve claims. Robin Graham will serve as Co-Chair of the Membership Committee for the South Carolina Women Lawyers Association. The mission of the South Carolina Women Lawyers Association (SCWLA) is to enhance the status, influence and effectiveness of women lawyers in the State of South Carolina. The Membership Committee works to increase membership by promoting the benefits of SCWLA membership to existing and potential members, encouraging involvement and engagement among members, serving as liaison to women's organizations at South Carolina's law schools, and helping plan member social events.

Graham and Winton Nurture Citizenship in Charleston Youth

As part of an iCivics local Charleston area schools event, Robin Graham and Tyler Winton presented “The Importance of Democracy” to students at two local Charleston, SC elementary schools. Tyler presented to first grade students at Sanders Clyde Elementary, and Robin presented to fifth grade students at Stiles Point Elementary. iCivics is a non-profit organization dedicated to reinvigorating civic learning through interactive and engaging learning resources. iCivics educational resources empower teachers and prepare the next generation of students to become knowledgeable and engaged citizens. Founded and led by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, iCivics provides students with the tools they need for active participation and democratic action, and teachers with the materials and support to achieve this. Their free resources include print-and-go lesson plans, award-winning games, and digital interactives. iCivics envisions a nation where all young Americans are prepared for active and intelligent citizenship, and Carlock Copeland is honored to play a role in their mission. CCS Rides the Reading Express

In April, Carlock Copeland Attorneys Sarah Wetmore, Laura Paton, Tyler Winton, Andrew Countryman and Robin Graham (pictured) participated in the University of South Carolina’s “Cocky Reading Express”. The program, which features a visit from University mascot Cocky himself, an afternoon of volunteers reading books with 4K through second grade students, and gifts of new books to take home, is designed to help children understand the importance of life-long reading. CCS Attorneys were excited to serve as volunteer readers at Sanders-Clyde Elementary School in Charleston, SC. The program has given away more than 60,000 books to students to date. South Carolina Court of Appeals Strikes Plaintiffs’ Class Action Allegations and Jury Trial Demand: A Win for Defendants Against the Growing Trend of Class Action Claims in Construction Defect Litigation by C. Robin Graham

As even those outside the legal profession know, the right to a jury trial is fundamental in American law. Another familiar legal concept is the class action lawsuit, where a group of similarly situated plaintiffs can band together to bring a civil suit, often against larger corporate defendants. Less familiar is that these rights – the right to a jury trial and the right to form a class action – can be contracted away. While jurisdictions may vary and each case turns on its own set of facts, this is the conclusion that the South Carolina Court of Appeals reached earlier this year in the case The Gates at Williams-Brice Condominium Association v. DDC Construction, Inc., et al. In the construction litigation context, this case is particularly notable given the increasing number of class action claims that general contractor, design professional and subcontractor defendants face.
